The Huffington Post reports that “On Wednesday, Virginia’s Republican-controlled legislature became one of the first to advance a bill that would allocate electoral votes by congressional district. Last week, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus endorsed pushing through similar proposals in other states with Republican legislative majorities.
The strategy would have states alter the way they translate individual votes into electors — thereby giving Republican candidates an advantage. Had the 2012 election been apportioned in every state according to these new Republicans plans, Romney would have led Obama by at least 11 electoral votes.”
We cannot allow our franchise to be marginalized by politics; we must not stand idle while legislative maneuvers threaten the very stability of our democratic way of life. We must unite, with one voice, and demand that immediate steps be taken. I ask that all of you, Democrat or Republican, join with me in defending our franchise. This is not a partisan issue, it is an American issue.
I have created a petition at whitehouse.gov requesting the President publically support a constitutional amendment preserving the integrity of the popular vote. Please help this petition go viral, follow the link below to sign it with a clear conscience and ask everyone you know sign it with you. We need at least 100,000 signatures to force the administration to respond.
Thank you for sharing this. I’ve signed and passed it around to friends.
Thank you
While I admire and will promote the petition, that is on a National level. An Amendment to the Constitution will take 7 to 10 years IF there were no opposition. Republican will oppose this.
The best, fastest and surest way to block these proposals is at the level they are created.
With movements within each State to overturn the State’s legislation.
Again I will promote it as we do need it but time is of the essence.
2016 is only 4 years away.
I agree, time is indeed short. Anything we can do an individuals to galvanize the Aemrican public is worthwhile.
Thanks for taking this initiative. I was shocked when I learned about this move on the Rachel Maddow show.
And thank you for commenting. I can’t stress this enough – we need to write thousands of letters, make every possible phone call, post like crazy across the internet and galvanize Americans into taking action. This issue is far too important to sit on the sidelines.
This is very scary. I have signed this petition and will also do so at the state level. Unfortunately I live in the state that probably is the home of the “think tank” of this initiative, Kentucky. I am embarrassed to say I am represented by Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, two of the obvious leaders of the corruption and initiative to steal our votes from us. No matter, we the people must stand up and make our voices heard, we must preserve democracy!!!! Luckily the grass roots organization that stopped the attempts to impede this vote is still in place and using their power to rally the troops against this travesty. If they cannot beat us, then they will cheat us and this is a sad example of the direction that our government is going. Thank you for your efforts!
Thank you. If we work together there is nothing we can’t accomplish; we are far from helpless in this struggle.
I signed the petition and posted the link on my twitter and facebook accounts. Thanks for bringing my attention to this issue.
You’re quite welcome. Thank you for taking action so quickly.
While I normally do not get involved in political arguments, I must agree that this is an issue that needs to be remedied. The popular vote of the average American was compromised when the electoral college was created; this will only negate the use of the electoral college more. We should not allow legislation that would direct the vote even more. Thank you for passing this along.
I shared this post and the petition on my Facebook and Twitter.
Thnak you!

Good luck in 2013!
Thank you–we get the vast majority of our news from NPR–somehow we missed this. I have shared this post on my facebook page, figuring that I’m not the only one who missed this “bite” of news. Barb/Bj
